Activated Charcoal Water Filter

Activated Charcoal filter in water dispenser zero waste not britta filter

Gone is the ugly Britta filter with its mystery little white insert that you pop in every month and reset the battery so you don't forget to take it out again. Say hello to the beautiful Kilner jar water dispenser. That little black line you can see at the bottom is a thumb width, 5 inch piece of activated charcoal.

There is much ado about activated charcoal at the moment, from health benefits to teeth whitening. I have no idea if any of these claims ring true, but one that is long attested is the filtering properties of charcoal. It has been used in industries for the same for a long time. It filters by drawing to it particles in the water. I'm not sure of the range that this covers but it seems to have worked rather well on our very hard water here in Bristol. I have no objection from a health point of view about drinking tap water but here it is just unpalatable.

This filter is designed to go into a water bottle and last for 6 months or longer depending on use. The jug doesn't normally get filled that far, just a little above the tap. So hopefully this will last at least four months or more.

The charcoal can be composted at the end.
